Juliet Lighter, who is a survivor of dating violence and a former Miss Hawaii USA, launched Women Speaking Out (WSO), as a teen and young women’s dating abuse preventative resource in 2007. The organization is focused on helping to support a niche market in the prevention field by helping girls to be proactive and have an active voice in the community.
“WSO Hawaii initiatives, events and website are designed to give power to young women and educate the public about dating violence” said Mark Quiritmit, President of the organization. “Our vision is simple, to change lives; to shine a light for those in the dark and to bring attention to this important issue through fashion, music, art, education and philanthropy. Women Speaking Out seeds the message of empowerment, self love, and self respect.”
Too many young women are not aware of the signs of abuse nor do they have the self-esteem to end abusive relationships; it is essential that they have access to resources where they can find support and help.
